The curriculum focuses on developing a "defensive mindset" and mastering practical techniques for real-world scenarios.
Key lessons include:
- Concealed Carry Tactics: Principles of concealment, the difference between cover and concealment, and drawing/re-holstering from a holster.
- Defensive Shooting Skills: Mastery of the "flash sight picture," shooting at varying distances, and moving off the "line of attack" while firing.
- Immediate Action Drills: Techniques for reloading under stress and clearing common firearm stoppages or malfunctions.
- Situational Awareness: Levels of mental awareness and strategies for avoiding life-threatening confrontations.
- Legal & Ethical Use: The importance of using a pistol responsibly and understanding the psychological and physiological changes that occur during an attack.
Equipment Requirements:
- A functional handgun: A quality semi-automatic or revolver in a minimum caliber of 9mm or .38 Special is recommended; "pocket pistols" are discouraged due to their small size.
- Strong-side, OWB (outside-the-waistband) holster: The holster must securely retain the pistol, cover the trigger guard completely, and be rigid enough to remain open for safe one-handed reholstering. Note: SERPA-style holsters or soft/flimsy holsters are generally not permitted.
- Sturdy gun belt: A quality belt (around 1.5" wide) designed to support the weight of the firearm and other gear is essential.
- Minimum of 3 magazines or speed loaders: If using a low-capacity magazine, 4 or more are recommended.
- Magazine pouch: A belt-mounted pouch to carry spare magazines is strongly recommended for efficiency during drills.
- Ammunition: At least 200 to 300 rounds of new factory ammunition; no reloads or steel core ammo are allowed.
- Eye and ear protection: Eye protection should be high-impact resistant, and electronic hearing protection is highly recommended to easily hear range commands.
- Concealment garment: A jacket, vest, or loose-fitting shirt that can conceal your holster and firearm is necessary for practicing drawing from concealment.
- Proper attire: Closed-toe shoes (no sandals or V-neck shirts), long pants, and a hat with a brim are required for safety and comfort on the range
Course Requirements: Participants must be 18 years of age or older and have completed a prerequisite course such as NRA Basic Pistol or NRA FIRST Steps Pistol or similiar. This is an intermediate to advanced course.
Recommended Optional Items:
- Suncreen and bug spray: for the outdoor range environement.
- Water and snacks/lunch: Hydration and energy is important. We will be taking a lunch break.
